The case: A 49 year old female clerk with recurrent depressive disorders and a current episode of depression of moderate severity (ICD 10-diagnosis: F33.1) underwent a medical evaluation for disability benefits. The evaluation was videotaped and – together with the clerk’s medical notes - circulated to 22 psychiatric experts with the request to provide a medical diagnosis and a judgment of her work capacity in her previous job. The German disability benefit system allocates claimants for disability benefits in one of three categories: able to work more than six hours = full work capacity; able to work between three and six hours = partial work capacity; able to work less than three hours = unable to work
